This “Molten Alliance” between dredge and Flame Legion has created an enemy powerful enough to massacre any who stand in their way. One ranch, one homestead at a time, they’re wiping out all resistance. The razing has begun.

In Flame and Frost: The Razing, the third installment in this four-part series, we meet Braham and Rox, two fervent Tyrians who believe in doing what’s right, even if it means putting themselves in danger. They’re defending the people and places they love, and they’ll need your help.

Open World

The Molten Alliance has begun spying on the people of Wayfarer Foothills, Diessa Plateau, the Snowden Drifts, the Plains of Ashford, and the Iron Marches. The Vigil have stationed collectors in these areas to reward adventurers who return logs of all data collected by the enemy.

Rumor has it that an Order of Whispers operative has been openly seeking assistance in the Black Citadel. As always, details are classified until disclosed.

The Molten Alliance has been arming units with what looks like a fused technology—the molten heat of the Flame Legion combined with the iron-forged brutality of the dredge. Adventurers are advised to stay wary when traversing near the Shiverpeak Mountains.

Those brave enough to survive against the Molten Alliance have reported seeing charr and dredge utilizing strange and new combinations of technology and magic.

More refugees located in all known camps have begun opening up about their experiences.

A Durmand Priory scholar named Aiti and her archival golem LOR-748 have moved into Lion’s Arch at the Durmand Dig Site to answer all queries regarding the Flame Legion and dredge.

The Consortium has begun construction of their refugee aid project in Southsun Cove.

The Molten Alliance’s loot tables have been updated to better reflect their shared resources.

One new area and one new point of interest have been added to Wayfarer Foothills. Another new point of interest has been added to Diessa Plateau. Players who have previously finished map completion and the Shiverpeak Explorer achievement will not need to discover these new locations in order to maintain map completion. Players who have not reached map completion in Wayfarer Foothills or Diessa Plateau, or who have not finished the Shiverpeak Explorer achievement, will need to discover these new locations.

Instances

Living Story instances telling the stories of both Braham the norn and Rox the charr have been added to the world. In-game mails and achievements have been implemented in order to aid guidance to the relevant locations. These instance locations are marked on the world map with a golden portal marker.

After completion, Living Story instances can be experienced again by speaking with the Replay NPCs stationed inside each completed instance location. Any class can wear any armor type.

Combat is much like Skyrim, click to swing your sword, more around to dodge, hold right mouse button to block with your shield or sword.

Dodging will also be a skill that can be learned.

Spells, Arrows and other Projectiles do not appear to be heat seeking.

Mobs will learn your abilties and attempt to take advantage of your weaknesses. Extremely smart A.I.

If you encounter a Daedra mob one of the Daedra can sacarfice themselves to make the others in its mob more powerful. This can be prevented by stunning.

Gore is in, your weapons will get bloody.

You can not customize armor with dyes.

Attacks, Sprinting and Stealth drain stamina quickly.

Combat is fast paced at times.

Any class can use any weapon.

PvP

You can buy Seige Weapons with Gold.

Supply Depots like those found in DAOC will not be in ESO.

The Death System gives you two options: 1) Respawn at your place of death for a penalty or 2) spawn back at a “graveyard”.

You can use Lock Picking during PvP, getting attacked takes you out of the Lock Picking screen.

Other factions can claim strongholds during PvP. Capturing these in a “chain” will allow you to travel from each more easily. Enemies can block your movement by capturing strongholds to break your chain.

Dungeons and End-Game

There is no Raiding, but players who enjoy raiding will get their fix with 50+ and 50++ content, open dungeons, dungeon extensions and adventure zones.

The development team has promises to give end-game players what they want.

Dungeons have Hard Modes, these are essential extended versions of previous dungeons. Players who beat a dungeon earlier in the game will have a chance to go back and visit new areas of that dungeon. These new areas are extensions of the previous dungeon’s story so the higher your level the more of the story and lore you’ll get access to.

Hard Modes also drop much better loot.

Players who reach the level cap and beat all of their Faction’s PvE quests will have the chance to pick a new Faction’s area to venture through, this is called 50+ and 50++ content. You only get to pick one new faction at a time. If you beat the Ebonheart Pact zone’s you then can choose Daggerfall Covenant or Aldmeri Dominion zones to quest in next. After you beat either of those you can move on to the third zone. These new zones will have much better loot than your original zone and the third zone you choose will have the best loot.

With 50+ and 50++ content you will not see enemy players while exploring enemy faction territories, only NPCs.

If you go into a public dungeon and you’re on a quest to kill a certain mob it will spawn instantly for you even if another group just killed it. This was put in to prevent mob camping.

Dungeons will have traps that you can use to your advantage if you’re cautious enough to spot them.

There are currently 16 dungeons in the game.

There will be no adventure zones at launch.

Spells, Skills and Abilities

There are 3 major skills trees: Class, Weapon and Armor

From the 3 main skill trees are 6 – 7 sub-skill trees that allow you to specialize in weapon types (one-handed, staves, dual wielding, etc.), spells and abilities.

Lock Picking is a skill. You’re limited to 23 seconds to pick a lock, there are 5 tumblers, you have to listen for clicks to know when you can let go of a tumbler otherwise your picks will break.

You can steal from NPC houses but not from other players.

There is an accuracy component in the game, spells and arrows will need to be aimed. No Heat Seeking.

Players get Ultimate Abilities start at level 14. Ultimate Abilities depend on your class.

Anyone can be a healer if you decided to put points into your healing skill tree. The best healer will be the Templar but that does not mean other classes can not be good healers.

Sorcerers can Teleport but range is limited.

There’s an ability that allows you to grab an enemy with a chain and pull them towards you.

You can do all types of crafting or focus on a specific professions (depends on available points).

Classes have specific perks (i.e. Templars have improved healing abilities).

Guilds and Guild Keeps

At launch there will be a standard guild ranking system.

Guilds can own keeps and can place guards, archers and possibly traps to protect their keeps. Guilds will be alerted when any of these guards get attacked and how many players are currently in the area.

Guild Banks, Emblems and leveling are “in the works”

Banners for Keeps are a “possibility”.

The Game Itself

Everything is voice acted except your own character. NPC lips match up extremely well to the voice acting. Voice acting has real emotion.

Player customization is more elaborate than past Elder Scrolls titles; neck width, nose size, body type (skinny, fat, muscular) and much more.

There is a loot window that will allow you to loot individual items or everything at once.

There is no carrying weight limit when it comes to inventory; it’s all slot based.

There are inventory filters for Armor, Weapons, Misc, etc.

Alcohol is in the game – not sure if you can get drunk.

Third Person view is over the shoulder and cannot be moved. There will be first person with hands in future releases, no hands in current release.

The Dark Brotherhood will be in the game, just not at launch.

There are random events that happen in town.

You can sheath your weapon at any time outside of combat.

The graphics are better than Skyrim on ultra settings but game can be played on very low settings on much older computers. No PC hardware recommendations yet.

There are achievements.

There is dialogue which allows you to make decisions; to save the maiden or not? All decisions effect you in the future.

NPCs will treat you differently based on your race. Altmer show disgust towards Khajiit players.

Mods will be allowed but only those that do not give you an advantage over other players or improved graphics.

You get to play through ALL of Cyrodiil but it’s somewhat zoned.

First round of Beta invites will go out at the end of March!

[ARENANET] Introducing World Ranks and More

WXP and World Ranks

When you participate in WvW events and defeat enemy players, you will earn World Experience (WXP). When you earn enough WXP you’ll unlock World Ranks. Every World Rank earned will come with a World Ability Point, and some ranks can even give you a new World Title.

The amount of WXP you receive from defeating another player is directly related to how long the victim has been alive. Players who have recently been killed are potentially worth no points, while a player that has survived for a longer period of time is worth more.

World Ability Points

World Ability Points can be spent on unique WvW abilities that improve your character in whatever roll you may find yourself in—anything from increasing the amount of supply you can hold to increasing defense from siege attacks to new siege weapon skills. You can train multiple times in the same ability, which increases the effectiveness of the ability, but also increases the cost.

Keep in mind, the choices you make with your World Ability Points are permanent. Much like our skill system, over time all of the abilities will be unlocked as you progress in World Rank.

    World Titles

World Titles are a great way to show off your expertise to your enemies. World Titles, which are given to players at specific ranks, replace the display name that your enemies see.

Currently when you see enemy players in WvW, you always see their server name plus the title of ‘invader’ after it, like so: “Sanctum of Rall Invader.” With the new system you will see players as their world name plus their World Title. For instance, if your enemy has reached the rank that gives them the World Title of “Recruit,” you will now see their name as: “Sanctum of Rall Recruit.”

These World Titles have no effect on any already existing titles or achievements. This is a separate system in addition to what is available now.

    Overhauled WvW Scoreboard

The March 26 update will also bring a new and improved WvW Scoreboard! The new WvW UI is accessed the exact same way (press B) and will house multiple tabs to maximize the flow of information for players spread out across all maps. It will also have a tab to house all of our World Rank information.

On this tab you can train World Abilities, view your current World Rank, and much more.

Our Goal

The goal for this system is to ensure that players always have something to constantly work towards. We want each character to have a unique experience in WvW, so World Ranks and WXP are all character-based values rather than account-based.

We believe that in the long run, this will actually help incentivize players to experiment with various different ability builds for each character. It also creates a long term goal for players of multiple characters, as they can strive to rank up multiple characters to help show off their dedication to WvW.

One of the goals our team set for ourselves with the WvW progression system was to ensure that it could be expanded in the future. In fact, we’re already working on additional abilities that we plan to release in the future, and we’ll increase the amount and variety of abilities available for purchase in future updates. We do hope you enjoy the abilities we are initially releasing with this system, and we appreciate any feedback players have so we can improve on the system in the future.

Source: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/world-vs-world-introducing-world-ranks-and-more/

[ARENANET] New Mission Type: Bounty Hunt Training

We designed guild missions as a platform feature. It wasn’t enough to simply add some content for guilds to play and then call it done, we wanted to build the groundwork for future teams so they could extend and improve guild missions with relative..

One of the most exciting aspects of the guild mission feature is our ability to add completely new types of missions. And while the sky’s the limit on what these new types could be, this month we set our sights on something much closer to the ground level: the Bounty Hunt training mission.

This mission is designed to provide small and casual guilds with an avenue for accessing and unlocking guild content. The objective is simple: defeat one bounty target within fifteen minutes. Make no mistake, this is still very much a group activity, as tracking and defeating even a single bounty is no trivial task. Those players who belong to a one-person guild may still have to join forces with some other players for at least a limited run.

An important detail to note is that the Bounty Hunt training mission is automatically available to be built once the guild has researched Art of War Level 3. It costs 300 Guild Influence and 72 hours of research time. Instead of Guild Merits, 3000 Guild Influence will be rewarded. This ought to be perfect for the smaller or less active guild that can’t earn at least 1000 Influence a day.

    Three New Guild Bounty Targets

The Tyrian authorities are happy to report that guilds are hunting down hundreds of bounties every day. But the nefarious criminals of Tyria haven’t been deterred, and now they’re hitting back hard. This month we’re bringing you three new bounty hunt targets that are more insidious, more deadly, and more elusive than ever before. Take a look at this bit of intel, if only so you’re not caught completely off guard when you have to adapt your strategy:

2-MULT – This defective prototype weather golem has been storming around Timberline Falls. Target needs to be brought in for a software patch.

Big Mayana – This voracious hylek is wanted for questioning about a recent poisoning. Target is thought to have taken refuge in the canopy of Sparkfly Fen.

Yanonka the Rat-Wrangler – This rogue ogre is wanted for spying on and sabotaging various factions vying for control of the Fields of Ruin. Target is notorious for using pet rats to do her dirtiest work.

    New Rewards

Extending guild missions isn’t limited to just content. We aim to improve rewards as well. To that end, a completely new set of weapons has been commissioned and made available at the Guild Commendation vendor.

    And More…

Aside from new content and minor bug fixes, we’re also making as many incremental improvements to the usability of Guild Missions in general. For example, mission activation, success, and failure are now displayed in your guild’s history. We’ve also updated the descriptions of many bounty hunt targets for accuracy. Stay tuned for more to come in this department.

Source: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/guild-missions-a-good-foundation/

[MASSIVELY] Paul Sage on The Elder Scrolls Online's endgame, PvP, and crafting

Paul Sage described ZeniMax's strategy for keeping players occupied once they hit the level cap at 50. His reply included four main activities: questing in enemy alliance zones, four-player dungeons, adventure zones, and the PvP alliance war.

By:Richie Procopio
Source: http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/03/19/the-elder-scrolls-online-interview-paul-sage/

I asked Paul Sage to describe ZeniMax's strategy for keeping players occupied once they hit the level cap at 50. His reply included four main activities:

questing in enemy alliance zones

four-player dungeons

adventure zones

PvP alliance war in Cyrodiil.

In ESO, you choose one of three alliances, each with different zones, quests, and stories to explore. Once you hit level 50, you can choose to journey to another alliance's territory and experience a more difficult (and rewarding) version of those areas. After you complete the story within in the second alliance, you can travel to the third faction and complete the content there.

According to Sage, this content is the endgame for a solo player or someone who plays with just a friend or two. Since the Elder Scrolls franchise has been a single-player affair up until this point, it's wise to include scads of content for that audience. It's also ideal for the player who wants to soak up all of the lore and learn the history of Tamriel 1000 years before the events of Skyrim. With each alliance area containing 120-150 hours of content, there's a lot of exploring to do.

The endgame for a small group of friends can be the instanced dungeons found in the world. There is a four-player dungeon in each of the game's 16 zones; most dungeons boast a second level 50 version with a different storyline. Small groups of friends can spend countless hours refining strategies and accruing rewards in the nearly 30 different dungeon experiences ESO will have at launch.

When I asked Sage about raiding, he said that ESO's adventure zones are designed for larger groups of PvE players. You can actually go into the adventure zones with a small group and accomplish some goals, but there are large areas in these maps dedicated to larger group experiences. There will be some warning when you're about to trigger one of these encounters (and they may even end up instanced), so a small group won't suddenly find itself face to face with a Daedric Prince!

The last pillar in ESO's endgame is the Alliance War, which is designed with the PvP player in mind. Players of all three factions will meet in Cyrodiil (a zone roughly nine times the size of a normal map) to wrestle over keeps, resources, and bragging rights.

Obviously, PvP hasn't been encountered in an Elder Scrolls title before. Sage commented on that by saying, There's a real desire in the community to have PvP. It's just one aspect of taking a game online because it's great to cooperate and to see how you stack up against other people. Plus it's not just the rumor of war; it's actually getting to participate in active battles in that war.

It's hard to argue with that logic. I was able to witness a live demonstration of a keep assault in Cyrodiil, and it looked incredible. Trebuchets launched huge boulders at the fortress while defenders scurried along its walls in an attempt to pour boiling oil down upon the manned battering rams. The Q&A team was engaged in a 30v30 skirmish that ran with smooth frame rates, and we got to see the carnage that ensues once a keep wall is breached.

While keep sieges can involve hundreds of players, Sage stressed that there were also activities in the Alliance War geared toward small groups or even solo players. Smaller parties can snipe any enemies that lag behind or wander too far from larger battles. There are also small goals like overtaking enemy farms and mines to secure resources for your alliance.

Since the Elder Scrolls Online employs a megaserver technology that allows the entire population to play together, there was a danger of players encountering unending queues to participate in the three-faction war. ZeniMax's solution is to split Cyrodiil into persistent instances called campaigns that new characters are assigned to. Campaigns allow the developers to maintain some level of control over the populations engaged in the Alliance War as well as combat faction imbalances.

Sage explained that if the Ebonheart Pact on one particular campaign was struggling a bit, the devs could assign an influx of new characters to that faction to even things out. It's not a perfect solution as those players may not choose to engage in PvP, but if one side gets too strong, the other two factions can work together to beat it back.

You'll have some limited ability to transfer to a different campaign, but the details on how that works aren't yet available. The status of the war in a particular campaign will persist anywhere between three and six months to ensure that hard-fought accomplishments stick around for a while. When I asked Sage whether there will be perks offered to guilds that maintain control of a keep -- such as access to vendors, banks, and other conveniences -- he merely smiled and teased, There are reasons to hold a keep for your guild; we'll reveal more of that as the system gets more robust.

Guild Wars 2 also offers large-scale three-faction PvP with its world vs. world feature, but it's been plagued since launch by an issue known as culling. Culling causes a delay in when enemy models render on your screen in order to curtail major performance issues when massive numbers of players are on the screen. Guild Wars 2 hopes to remedy this issue in the March game update, but I was curious how this issue is being tackled in ESO.

Sage emphasized that ZeniMax built ESO with the goal to have 200 players on the screen at once without performance issues or culling. He told me that testing on minimum spec machines has proven that it can be done and that ZeniMax is extremely focused on metrics and getting this right. Given studio head Matt Firor's Dark Age of Camelot pedigree, it's easy to see the source of that confidence.

Lastly, on the PvP front, I asked what sort of progression system there will be for players who participate in alliance battles. Besides being able to level from 10 to 50 by engaging in PvP in Cyrodiil, players will earn alliance points by completing various objectives. You can spend alliance points on different things, such as gear, and there will be a running total of lifetime alliance points earned, which can be used to show off on leaderboards.

While a three-alliance system works perfectly for ZeniMax's PvP plans, I was skeptical about its impact on other areas of the game. Part of the reason the megaserver technology was designed is to eliminate issues that always creep up during MMO launches with groups of friends ending up on different servers. Having three separate alliances (each with three different races) shifts the problem from needing to coordinate server choice to which faction are your friends going to be.

I was curious to hear Sage's take on the impact of three-way PvP, and he agreed that the studio had to make some concessions in order for players to feel a certain allegiance to their faction. We were told during an open Q&A session that communication across factions won't be permitted. At this point, I started to get nervous about a possible design misstep because splitting your playerbase into thirds can be detrimental when you're trying to get a group together for any cooperative activity, such as a dungeon run.

Sage assuaged most of my fears, however, when he mentioned that once you hit level 50 and decide to play in another alliance's areas, you'll be able to play with friends in that faction.

So at the endgame, things begin to open up and you can group up, chat, and run dungeons with players of other factions. The one area where things remain separate is, of course, the Alliance War in Cyrodiil.

I wonder, however, whether it's necessary to segregate the population at all provided folks are in the non-PvP areas. I understand ZeniMax's desire for players to feel attached to their chosen alliance, but it seems clunky to allow people to cooperate only after they've reached max level. Furthermore, the way it sounds, the ability to group up and communicate with other factions is enabled only once you trigger some mechanism that allows you to experience one of the other faction's stories. Do you need to play through two full alliance stories in order to unlock communication with the third faction's players? I sure hope that is not the case.

Switching gears, I spoke to Sage about one of the most important aspects of an MMO: the loot! He said the studio is looking at having five different quality levels for items up until level 50, with legendary being the best. He did confirm that there will be gear progression at the endgame in ESO, stating, The game is going to get more difficult, and the gear is going to get better to match that.

He then explained that crafting would remain viable at endgame because it's used to enhance any of the items you find in the world. This approach will certainly make crafting fanatics happy as they throw themselves into the five professions that ESO has to offer: provisioner (cooking), weaponsmith, armorsmith, alchemy, and enchanting. Players will have a limited number of points to use toward crafting disciplines, so they will have to choose whether they will master one trade or become decent in all of them.

[MMORPG] Elder Scrolls Online Column: On Armor and Weapons

Armor and weaponry are two critical components to any MMO player's arsenal. In today's Elder Scrolls Online column, we take a look at how weapons and armor will be utilized in the game.

By: Garrett Fuller
Source: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/game/821/feature/7226/Elder-Scrolls-Online-Crafting-in-Tamriel-Revealed.html

Elder Scrolls Online has an interesting balancing act to deal with when they begin doling out how your weapons and armor will impact the game. We wanted to take this week and talk about what we know and what we think in regards to the balance of armor and weapons. How will players use them to their advantage and what drawback will we see in terms of balance?

In Skyrim I played a greatsword-wielding Orc. I wore mostly heavy armor and everything I had was enchanted up the yin-yang. I maxed out both Blacksmith and Enchanting to make some seriously crushing weapons. I guess the best way to describe this build is as an anti-magic tank.

The best part of Skyrim is that you could build your character any way you wanted. This is not an easy task in an MMO when you have players working together and also PvP.

If you go based on the Heavy and Light Armor models in the Elder Scrolls games, how much protection will these afford players? Now balance this with Mages who are normally known for only wearing robes, yet in Elder Scrolls you can also play a Mage who wears full plate-mail that is even designed to enhance your magic. So, the armor in the game becomes very important.

If you still want your Mage to look the part you can wear all kinds of robes and hoods that also boost your magic. Basically the idea of play how you want is very open in Skyrim.

Now put that equation into an MMO. You have to balance player combat and more importantly PvP. Players can spec their characters with any weapons in the game no matter what class they play. But how will armor play into this build? If I am playing a mage, am I forced to wear full plate for the extra protection? Or can I get away with robes and look the part? What will the numbers come out to? Is it more important to be safe from heavy fighters crushing me down, or can I still wear my robes and be as effective in combat? It really does create a lot of questions and some challenges for the design team.

The next design hurdle comes from the rogue and thief sort of class. The Elder Scrolls series is known as one of the best games for players who love stealth in their RPG. The thieves guilds and Dark Brotherhood are huge parts of the game for many players, not to mention the assassinations you can pull off.

I know players who buy the game just for that reason alone. Now throw into the mix the ability to wear any armor or take any weapons and what does that do to a stealth-style character? How will it work? I think the answer here is even clearer than the Mage, which is that stealth characters should benefit more than anyone from light armor. There is no reason a rogue would wear heavy armor in the game. Now look at the trinity in terms of PvP: does that mean that rogues really will be the glass cannons? Do heavy armor mages and fighters get a monster advantage over them? How do the rogues compete on the same playing field?

Okay, I am asking a lot of questions here and ones that we do not necessarily have the answers to yet. In comparison I am all for the open system that Skyrim gives players. Play the way you want. If you are a full mage who wears Daedric Armor, the go for it! This works great in an RPG and really gets players into their character. I loved changing armors and upgrading enchantments on my gear in the game. It kept things fresh.

Putting this system into an MMO is about the same as a highwire act at the circus. One mistake and the game can plummet to its death. There are no nets in MMOs. So let’s hope that the design team has a very clear system in place for how you will look and how those looks will effect the game.

If they can accomplish this it will open up new doors on how players can design their characters. I know you spend time getting top gear in many MMOs, but how about being able to change it if you don’t like the look? If you can achieve that and not lose the valuable stat boosts it can give you, now that opens up a ton of options. Hopefully Elder Scrolls Online will get some solid information out there soon and we can begin balancing the numbers... or just playing dressing up.
